Leslie Irwin specialised in hand and wrist surgery and practised in the North East of England, including at Sunderland Royal Hospital and Spire Washington Hospital. He retired from his NHS role in 2022 but continued to see private patients until 2023.

Reported Review of Leslie Irwin’s Surgical Practice

Suspended by Spire Healthcare in August 2023 after concerns were raised regarding certain surgical procedures.
Practising privileges withdrawn in September 2024, with GMC registration formally relinquished in May 2025.
Spire Healthcare is conducting a review of a defined cohort of patients and has established a dedicated patient helpline.
The review is being carried out in line with NHS England’s National Quality Board Recall Framework.

It is important to note that a review or suspension does not prove negligence. Its purpose is to assess clinical standards and determine whether further care or monitoring may be needed.

Investigation and Patient Experiences

The review into Leslie Irwin’s practice is ongoing, and it is not yet clear how many patients may have been affected or the extent of any harm.

Some patients, as reported publicly, have described undergoing multiple surgical procedures over many years. For example, a patient in her 40s reportedly had numerous procedures on her wrist, as well as additional surgeries on her hip and shoulder. Independent medical assessments cited in reporting have questioned whether all of these procedures were clinically necessary, and the patient has been advised that further surgery may be needed to support her long-term recovery.

Regulatory Oversight

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspected Spire Washington Hospital following these reports. Findings will be published once available.
South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust are working with Spire to determine whether any NHS patients require follow-up review.
