What Is Civil Partnership Dissolution?

Civil partnership dissolution is the legal process of ending a civil partnership. It’s very similar to divorce, and you can apply once the partnership has lasted at least one year.

How Does the Process Work?

We’ll be by your side through every stage, making sure you know what to expect and avoiding unnecessary delays or confusion. Here’s how the process typically unfolds:

  1. Apply – You or your partner can apply individually or together.
  2. 20-Week Reflection Period – After your application is issued, there’s a built-in pause to reflect, plan, and make arrangements for children or finances.
  3. Conditional Order – This confirms the court agrees the partnership has irretrievably broken down.
  4. Final Order – Six weeks later, you can apply for the final order, which legally ends the partnership.

We’ll handle the paperwork, track deadlines, and keep you informed so you can focus on your future.

What Happens with Finances?

Dissolving a civil partnership also means working out the financial side of things. This could include:

  • What happens to your home or other property
  • Dividing savings, pensions, or debts
  • Future financial support between you
  • Business interests or jointly owned assets

We’ll help you understand your financial rights and responsibilities and work toward a fair settlement through negotiation where possible, or through the courts if needed.

What If You Have Children?

If you share children or parental responsibility, their wellbeing is a top priority. We’ll help you make clear, child-focused arrangements, including:

  • Where the child will live
  • Contact and time spent with each parent
  • Schooling, healthcare, and other major decisions
  • Financial support

If needed, we can help you apply for a Child Arrangements Order and support you through the legal process.

 Do I Need a Solicitor?

You can apply for a dissolution on your own but having the right legal support ensures your rights are protected, your application is handled correctly, and you’re not left dealing with complex decisions alone.

A solicitor can help you:

  • Avoid common mistakes and delays
  • Reach a fair financial agreement
  • Navigate parenting responsibilities
  • Handle negotiations or court proceedings
  • Feel informed, supported, and confident throughout
