A Gwynedd man who attacked another man he suspected of having an affair with his wife, biting off part of his ear, has been given a suspended sentence.

Kenneth Jones, aged 43, from Llanfairfechan, attacked his victim in a ‘blind rage’ after attending a birthday party at Bangor Rugby Club. He and his wife had argued at the party and Jones left early. Mrs Jones was then given a lift home by another man who Jones attacked in a when he saw them together. Jones was drunk and naked at the time.

His victim was accused by Jones as wanting an affair with his wife and he continued to repeatedly punch him and bit his ear, which needed nine stitches.

Jones was given an eight month jail term suspended for two years after he admitted causing actual bodily harm at Caernarfon Crown Court. He must also carry out 200 hours unpaid work and pay £1,000 compensation, a £500 fine and £500 costs.

The court heard how the attack had been the result of an unfounded suspicion by Jones that the victim was seeking an affair with his wife. Prosecutor Karl Scholz told the court it was an unprovoked, violent attack propelled by Jones’ drunken state.

Jones’ defence lawyer Anthony Rose said: “This is completely uncharacteristic behaviour. He’s completely remorseful.” The court was told that Jones had apologised to his victim just minutes after the attack.

Judge Rhys Rowlands told Jones whilst sentencing: “It’s not the sort of behaviour one expects to see from a grown man of previous character and the explanation is you were drunk.”
