A recent interim report from Baroness Amos, leading a national review into maternity care in England, has raised serious concerns about the quality and safety of services in some NHS trusts. Her early findings describe instances of women experiencing poor care, including lack of support during labour, inadequate attention to medical concerns, unsanitary conditions and insufficient access to meals. The review also highlights that women from Black, minority ethnic, and working-class backgrounds may face discriminatory treatment, while families sometimes feel blamed when tragedies occur.
The report stresses that these issues are not isolated, but systemic, and Baroness Amos has called for changes to improve safety, oversight, and accountability across maternity services. While many staff are dedicated professionals providing good care, the interim findings suggest that persistent failures in policy, training, and governance have contributed to preventable harm. The review is ongoing, with the final report expected in the Spring, and is intended to inform national recommendations to strengthen maternity and neonatal services.
