What is Silicosis?

Silicosis is an occupational lung disease resulting from inhaling silica particles. Silica is commonly found in certain types of stone, rock, sand and clay when they are cut, ground or drilled. Over time, inhaled silica can lead to severe health issues including life-threatening complications.

There are three main types of silicosis:

  • Chronic Silicosis: Develops after long-term exposure, typically over 10-20 years.
  • Accelerated Silicosis: Occurs within 5-10 years of high levels of exposure.
  • Acute Silicosis: Results from short-term, intense exposure to silica dust and can develop within a few weeks or years.
