Criminal Injury

Claiming Compensation For Violent Crime

Blameless victims of violent crime are able to apply for government compensation for their injuries.

The money is paid under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, which is administered by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). The rules are set by parliament and the size of each payment is calculated using a Tariff of Injuries, with awards varying according to the seriousness of the injuries sustained.

The scheme is society’s way of recognising that you have been a victim. It is intended to be a last resort and if the opportunity exists to pursue a civil claim, this should be explored first.

CICA also expects you to have taken reasonable steps to obtain any social security benefits and insurance payments for which you may be entitled as a result of your injuries.

CICA currently handles up to 40,000 compensation applications each year, paying out more than £200m to victims of violent crime.

Macks Solicitors can help you with your claim, making the whole process as smooth and easy as possible and ensuring that you receive the maximum award for your injuries.
