Toddler trapped between camper van seats dies.

A 17-month-old boy has died after becoming trapped between two seats in a camper van.

The toddler called Tim Hardman had been staying with his family in the camper van in Ulpha, near Broughton when he stopped breathing following the incident on 29 July.

Tim was taken to Furness General Hospital in Barrow, Cumbria and was later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The young boy died the next day from his injuries.

An inquest into his death is to be carried out and was opened by South and East Cumbria Coroner Ian Smith at Barrow Town Hall yesterday.

The parents of Tim, Colin Hardman, aged 45, and Susan Johnson, aged 38 of Roose Road in Barrow are devastated by their son’s untimely death.

The incident was investigated by police and a spokesman from Cumbria Constabulary said: “On Thursday, July 30, police were informed of the sudden death of a 17-month-old boy from the Barrow area at 4.18pm. The boy was admitted to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, July 29, after an incident inside a camper van, which was parked in the Broughton-in-Furness area. While in the van, the boy became trapped between two seats and stopped breathing. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the boy tragically died in hospital on the evening of Thursday, July 30.”

The small local community expressed their sadness at the death of the child and confirmed that the family had been living in the camper van in Ulpha for six months. Neighbor Karen Varley said: “It’s absolutely devastating. Our thoughts go out to the family.”

Cumbria Police said investigating officers had concluded the boy's death was accidental.
