Have you or your child been the victim of a dog attack? If so then it may be possible to claim compensation . Each case needs to be considered on its own merits and our team of lawyers will be able to advise you in what can be a tricky area of law.
Broadly, if a particular animal is shown to have had a tendency towards aggressive behaviour and if the owner failed to control it properly then that owner may be held liable for injury caused. Certain more aggressive breeds require extra care and control.
In the case of a dog bite we would recommend that you take the following steps ;
1. Try and obtain the name and address of the owner (not least because any claim would need to be directed to the owner)
2. Seek immediate medical advice - a doctor will need to check that you are up to date with tetanus jabs and even a minor wound caused by an animal will be extremely prone to infection and will need to be treated accordingly
3. Contact the police as the animal may very well pose a serious risk to other members of the public. See if either you or the police can find out whether the owner has home and contents insurance (or sometimes even 'pet insurance') to cover any claim.
If liability can be established we will ensure that you are properly compensated for your losses. Items of compensation in this area typically include ;
1. Compensation for the injury received
2. Compensation for psychological damage caused
3. Compensation for the cost of medical treatment; eg. scar revision surgery, psychological counseling
4. Compensation for loss of earnings and other financial losses
